Random Bits and Pieces of Nothing

ghost-plot replied to your post: Reasons Why Pottermore Won’t Be Ending Beta Any Time Soon:

lol, Pottermore. The glitches are just entertaining at this point. I’ve taken a break from it until CoS comes out, the information is what I enjoy about it.

I logged back in and found:

-Lots and lots of RP-ing in the Great Hall (along with infighting amongst the RPers; I don’t know if there are multiple factions, but they were making upset OOC comments and bitching at one another.) I just rolled my eyes and scrolled on, though I did report one comment that had a posted link to a tinychat, because if you can get links through their mod system…can you imagine once that opens to the public? Alllll sorts of issues with being able to link to outside sites, especially unmodded chats. (Goodbye, family-friendliness!)

-Slytherin’s overtaken Ravenclaw in the House Cup standings. However, apparently there are still some really committed people with over 150,000 points. (How do they find the time?!)

-Went to brew a potion and found that glitch. -11%. Wonderful. There’s also a lot of talk about randomly exploding cauldrons in the Ravenclaw common room - apparently there’s an issue where it randomly removes cauldrons from inventory and/or accuses the user of having sped up the clock settings when they haven’t. There’s also a large number of comments saying there’s been recent trouble with the comment system and the occasional traffic issue.

The only interesting thing about it right now is that one of my friends just got an unsorted account, so I’m waiting to see where she’ll end up - she’s taking her sweet time going through the first five chapters, and is currently stuck in Diagon Alley debating the merits of a Siamese cat vs. a ginger cat as an avatar.

(Her: “Well, the Siamese is prettier, but the ginger one probably goes better with more House colors in the background…” Me: “DON’T YOU WANT YOUR WAND?! PLEASE GO TAKE THE WAND AND SORTING QUIZZES TO GIVE ME MORE DATA FOR MY SPREADSHEETS!”)

Really, I think they’d have been better off publishing an Encyclopedia separately and making the Sorting Hat and wand quizzes open to everyone as an enticement to buy the e-Books. The info is the best thing; the quizzes are the only additional interesting thing that the site provides that a paper book couldn’t. Sony’s in financial trouble, which should make them want to get the e-Book store open ASAP, but with the other site problems, I don’t know how they can.

It’s a combination of the fact that they want social interaction without individual messaging, moderated forums, or anything that would make it a viable social site plus the fact that a large segment of people wanted an MMORPG and will never be happy with anything else plus all the delays and general uncommunicative nature of the Pottermore team (which probably results from lack of team size, which is from Sony’s vast underestimation of interest/site use, etc.) I mean, it’s a fun experience, but the way they went about executing it is tremendously problematic. And this is with fewer than 700,000 users!
